UPDATE: Nov 23, 2018
You can now watch me making the pendants in my recent video on Youtube:
The following is the original post:
Today, I’ve just finished a few new pendants and it was really fun and easy to make them, so I want to share the whole thing with you.
Materials you’ll need:
1. Papier mache clay or any air dry clay of your choice. (click the link to see how you can make the PMC)
2. Acrylic paints of your choice.
3. Fine sand paper
4. Acrylic sealer (mod podge, spray sealer or similar)
Tools:
1. Painting brush(es)
2. 2-3 styluses in different sizes
Note: These 4 pendants are created from a somewhat differently made paper clay than described in the previous post 7 Easy Steps to make PMC: instead of printed waste paper I used a 12-egg carton box. The rest of the procedure is the same.
Instructions:
1. Take approximately a fistful-size ball of clay and shape a free form pendant 5-6 mm thick (it will shrink a little bit while drying).
2. Make a hole with a drinking straw or tooth-pick for the cord. Also, as long as the pendant is still wet, you can play adding some texture with styluses before drying or let decoration for later as described in step 4.
3. Let the pendant dry completely for a day or two, maybe even more. Drying time varies, depends on weather, humidity, season… But keep in mind, this step is the most important so you don’t risk molding or paint peeling after it’s done.
This is how they look when dry. (For this batch of clay I used a greenish egg box).
- Sand each pendant carefully to smooth its surface. First, paint it with white acrylic paint (or gesso) and then with the colour of your liking. It is self understood that every coat of paint needs to be dry before applying the next one. If you didn’t apply texture on a pendant, after the final coat of paint is dry completely, you may want to decorate it with a piece of napkin or thin wrapping paper (decoupage), free hand drawing or anything else you can think of… and again, let it dry!
- In the end, seal it with at least two coats of a transparent acrylic sealer, glossy or matte depending on your preference, allowing each coat to dry completely! And voila… insert the cord and wear it!
And by the way, almost forgot, they are unbreakable! When they fall they won’t break or crack, even if you step on them!
Yep, tested it!
When you look at the final result, can you believe they are created from trash? In their past life 🙂 they were an egg carton ready to be thrown away …
